Same-Day Crowns: How You Can Walk Out With a New Tooth in One Visit

CEREC technology lets us design, create, and place a custom crown in a single appointment, skipping the messy impressions, temporary crowns, and second visit.

What a same-day crown actually is

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth that's been weakened by a large cavity, a crack, a big old filling, or a root canal. It restores the tooth's shape, strength, and look, and it's designed to be long-lasting. A same-day crown is exactly that, just made and placed in a single visit instead of two.

The technology behind it is called CEREC, which uses a digital scanner and an in-office milling unit to design and create your crown while you wait. At Kentfield Dental, that often means you can walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out the same afternoon with a finished, natural-looking crown bonded into place.

Why the old two-visit way was such a hassle

The traditional crown process usually takes two appointments spread a couple of weeks apart. At the first visit, your dentist preps the tooth, then takes a physical impression by having you bite into a tray of putty that has to set in your mouth. For a lot of people, that goopy mold is the least pleasant part of the whole thing.

That impression then gets shipped to an outside lab, which can take one to three weeks to make your crown. In the meantime, you wear a temporary crown that's held on with weak cement. Temporaries can feel bulky, come loose, or pop off entirely, often at the worst possible moment, and you may end up chewing carefully on one side until your second visit.

Then you come back, get numbed up again, have the temporary removed, and hope the lab-made crown fits. Same-day crowns can remove the lab wait, the temporary, and that whole second appointment.

How the one-visit process works, step by step

First, Dr. Ghaffarpour, known to patients as Dr. G, numbs the area and gently shapes the tooth to make room for the crown, removing any decay or damaged structure along the way.

Next, instead of putty, we use a small digital scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your tooth and the teeth around it. It's quick, comfortable, and there's nothing to bite into. That scan flows straight into design software, where your crown is custom-built on screen to match your bite and the contours of your natural teeth.

From there, the design is sent to an in-office milling machine that carves your crown out of a solid block of high-quality ceramic, often in well under an hour. We check the fit and color, make any small adjustments, and bond it into place. You leave with a finished tooth, not a temporary.

Are same-day crowns as good as lab crowns?

In most everyday situations, same-day ceramic crowns are strong, precise, and designed to be long-lasting. The digital workflow can actually improve accuracy because there's no putty to distort and no shipping back and forth between the office and a lab. The ceramic blocks we use are tooth-colored and designed to blend in, which can be great for both back molars and teeth that show when you smile.

That said, same-day crowns aren't the right answer for every single case. Some complex restorations, certain bridges, or specific cosmetic situations may still be better served by a custom lab or a different material. Dr. G will walk you through your options and recommend what makes sense for your tooth, rather than push the technology just because it's there.

Who tends to benefit most

Same-day crowns can be a good fit for busy people who'd rather not take two days off, patients who dislike traditional impressions or have a sensitive gag reflex, and anyone who'd love to skip the weeks of wearing a temporary. They can also help in a pinch, like when a tooth cracks or an old filling fails and you want it handled quickly.

Because Kentfield Dental serves Kentfield and the greater Marin community, we know how valuable a single, efficient visit can be when your day is already full. If dental visits make you anxious, we also offer comfort options including nitrous, oral, and IV sedation, so getting a crown can feel calmer than you might expect.

If you have a tooth that aches, looks worn down, or has a large filling you're worried about, we're happy to take a look. We're currently seeing patients at our temporary Mill Valley location while our permanent Kentfield office is being built, and you can reach us anytime by phone or text at (415) 456-5402 or by email at info@kentfielddental.com.

The bottom line: CEREC same-day crowns let Kentfield Dental design, mill, and bond a custom, long-lasting crown in one visit, skipping the goopy impressions, temporary crown, and second appointment of the traditional process.

Frequently asked questions

Most same-day crown appointments take about two hours from start to finish. That includes prepping the tooth, scanning it, designing and milling the crown in our office, and bonding it into place, all in a single visit instead of two appointments spread weeks apart.

The procedure itself is done with local anesthetic, so the area is numb and you typically shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Some mild soreness or sensitivity afterward is normal and usually fades within a few days. For anxious patients, we also offer nitrous, oral, and IV sedation to help you stay comfortable.

Same-day ceramic crowns are designed to be long-lasting, and with good brushing, flossing, and regular checkups, many can last well over a decade. Lifespan depends on your bite, habits like grinding, and overall oral health, so we may recommend a nightguard if you clench or grind.

Yes, in some cases. Certain complex restorations, multi-tooth bridges, or specific cosmetic and material needs can be better suited to a custom dental lab. Dr. G will evaluate your tooth and recommend whichever option offers the best fit, strength, and appearance for your situation.
