Same-Day & Immediate Dental Implants

When the timing and the bone are right, we can remove a failing tooth and place your implant in the same visit — often fewer surgeries, less waiting, and a tooth-shaped temporary you can leave with the same day.

For the right candidate, a failing tooth doesn't have to mean months of gaps and multiple surgeries. At Kentfield Dental, Dr. Soroush Ghaffarpour ("Dr. G") performs immediate, same-day implant placement in-house — gently removing the tooth and, when the bone and surrounding tissue allow, placing the implant in one appointment. It's a more streamlined path for many Marin patients, planned with 3D imaging so candidacy and placement are decided in advance, not improvised mid-surgery. From our boutique Kentfield office, Dr. G plans every case aesthetics-first, with the final crown and your gumline in mind from day one.

What are same-day and immediate dental implants?

An immediate (or "same-day") dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jaw at the very same appointment a damaged or failing tooth is removed — instead of extracting the tooth, waiting several months for the socket to heal, and only then doing a separate implant surgery. By combining those steps, many patients have fewer total procedures, less overall healing time, and one fewer surgical recovery to schedule around.

Where the bone is healthy and the site is free of active infection, we can often also attach a temporary, non-chewing crown the same day — so you can leave with a tooth-shaped placeholder rather than a visible gap. It's important to understand that "same-day" refers to placing the implant and a temporary in one visit; the implant still needs time to fuse with the bone (a process called osseointegration) before the final, full-strength crown is made, usually a few months later. Not every tooth or every patient is a candidate, which is why careful planning comes first — and being honest about when immediate placement isn't the right call is part of conservative care.

How we place same-day implants in our Kentfield office

Same-day implant dentistry rewards precision, and precision is built into how our Kentfield practice is equipped. Before we touch a tooth, Dr. G captures a low-dose 3D scan with our Vatech Green X12 CBCT, which shows bone height, density, sinus position and nerve location in detail a flat x-ray simply can't. That 3D view tells us whether immediate placement is realistic for your specific tooth — and lets us plan the implant's angle and depth in advance rather than deciding mid-surgery. Because the surgery, the imaging and the lab work all happen under one roof, Marin patients aren't bounced between offices to get an answer — and Dr. G, who speaks Spanish, works at an unhurried, reassuring pace throughout.

  • Vatech Green X12 CBCT 3D imaging — low-dose cone-beam scans map bone, sinus and nerve before placement, so candidacy and implant position are planned, not improvised
  • In-house oral surgery — extraction and implant placement performed by Dr. G in our Kentfield office, with no outside referral or second surgical team
  • Formlabs in-house 3D printing — surgical guides and same-day temporaries can be printed on-site, often the day of your procedure
  • 3Shape / Primescan 2 digital scanning — no goopy impression trays; we capture your bite and tissue digitally for a better-fitting result
  • Soft-tissue dental laser — used where appropriate for cleaner, more comfortable tissue management around the implant site
  • CEREC same-day technology on hand for restorative steps when a milled restoration is the right call

Why patients choose us for this

Fewer surgeries, one recovery

Combining the extraction and implant placement into a single appointment can mean one surgical visit and one healing period to plan around, instead of two separate procedures spaced months apart.

Less time with a gap

When you're a candidate for an immediate temporary, you can leave the same day with a tooth-shaped placeholder rather than living with a visible space — a real difference for a front tooth or anything in your smile line.

Helps preserve bone and gum shape

Placing an implant promptly can help support the natural contours of the bone and gum tissue around the socket, which is often harder to recreate once a site has healed empty for months.

Planned in 3D before we begin

Every immediate implant starts with a low-dose CBCT scan, so placement is guided by your actual anatomy — bone, sinus and nerve position — for a more predictable, conservative result.

Aesthetics-first from day one

Dr. G plans the final look from the start, so the implant is positioned with the eventual crown and your gumline in mind — not just where it's easiest to place.

Streamlined and convenient for Marin patients

With imaging, surgery and lab work all in-house in Kentfield, you spend less time traveling between specialists and more of the process under one roof.

What to expect

Consultation & 3D planning

We start with an exam and a low-dose Vatech CBCT scan in our Kentfield office. Dr. G reviews your bone, the surrounding tissue and the tooth in 3D, shows you what he sees on screen, and determines whether immediate placement is a realistic option for your specific situation.

Gentle extraction & implant placement

On the day of surgery, the failing tooth is carefully removed and — when the bone and site allow — the implant is placed into the prepared socket in the same visit, with comfort measures in place throughout. Where suitable, a printed surgical guide helps position the implant exactly as planned.

Same-day temporary, where suitable

If your case allows, we attach a temporary, non-chewing crown so you can leave with a tooth-shaped placeholder instead of a gap. You'll get clear guidance on eating and caring for the site while everything settles.

Healing & integration

Over the next few months the implant fuses with your bone (osseointegration). We check in during this phase to confirm everything is healing as expected — this quiet stretch is what gives the final result its strength.

Your final crown

Once the implant is fully integrated, we capture a digital scan and place your final, full-strength crown — color-matched and shaped to blend naturally with your smile, and designed to function and feel like your own tooth.

Your comfort matters. Comfort and sedation options are available to help anxious patients stay relaxed through extraction and implant placement, and Dr. G — who speaks Spanish — works at an unhurried, reassuring pace in our boutique Kentfield setting.

Are you a candidate for an immediate implant?

Same-day implant placement is a wonderful option — but only when the conditions are right, and being honest about that is part of conservative care. The two biggest factors are bone and infection: there needs to be enough healthy bone to hold the implant securely the day it's placed, and the site should be free of significant active infection. Your CBCT scan answers most of these questions before any decisions are made. If immediate placement isn't ideal for your tooth, we'll tell you plainly and walk you through the alternative — often a brief healing or grafting period first, followed by placement — so you can still reach a strong, lasting result on a timeline that protects the outcome. A consultation in our Kentfield office is the best way to know what's right for you.

  • You have a failing or non-restorable tooth that needs to come out and you'd like to avoid living with a gap
  • Imaging shows enough healthy bone to stabilize an implant at the time of extraction
  • The site is free of significant active infection (or it can be managed first)
  • You're a non-smoker or willing to stop during healing, and your gums and overall health support implant treatment
  • You'd prefer fewer total surgeries and a more streamlined timeline where it's clinically appropriate

Frequently asked questions

Yes — for the right candidate, a failing tooth can be removed and an implant placed in the same visit. This is called an immediate implant, and it depends mainly on having enough healthy bone and a site without significant active infection, which we confirm with a 3D CBCT scan beforehand at our Kentfield office.

Often, yes — when your case allows, we can attach a temporary, non-chewing crown the same day so you don't leave with a gap. The permanent, full-strength crown comes later, after the implant has had a few months to fuse with the bone.

While the implant and a temporary can be placed in one visit, the implant typically needs a few months to integrate with the bone before the final crown is fitted. Healing time varies by person and site, and we'll give you a realistic timeline at your consultation.

Most patients are surprised by how manageable the procedure feels, and we offer comfort and sedation options to help you stay relaxed throughout. Some soreness and swelling afterward is normal and is usually well controlled with the aftercare instructions we provide.

If imaging shows the bone or site isn't ready for same-day placement, we'll explain it clearly and recommend an alternative — often a short healing or bone-grafting step first, then placement. The goal is always a strong, lasting result, even if that means a slightly longer path.

Cost depends on your specific case — the tooth involved, whether grafting is needed, and the final restoration — so we provide a personalized estimate after your consultation and CBCT scan. As a fee-for-service practice, we're happy to review your dental benefits and help you understand your investment before you decide.
